Insulation fault locators are used to accurately pinpoint insulation faults in unearthed (ungrounded) power systems, also known as IT systems. To operate effectively, these locators require an insulation monitoring device equipped with an internal pulse generator or connected to an external pulse generator, which supplies the test signal.

The locator detects and evaluates these test signals using one or more measuring current transformers, which capture the test current generated by the monitoring system. This allows the precise location of insulation faults—quickly, safely, and without interrupting system operation, as the entire process is performed while the system remains fully online.
